Frequently asked questions

What is FreeAgent?

FreeAgent is accounting software that’s designed to automate away tedious, manual admin tasks like invoicing and expenses. It streamlines tax reporting, and is HMRC-recognised for Making Tax Digital (MTD) for VAT and Income Tax. Insights and reports help you to understand your business’s health and plan with confidence. And with our mobile app, you can easily take care of business on the go, wherever you are.

Is FreeAgent really free?

Yes! FreeAgent is owned by the NatWest Group, so customers with a NatWest, Mettle by NatWest, Royal Bank of Scotland or Ulster Bank business current account receive one fully-funded FreeAgent licence as a perk of their account. This applies to all company types, including landlords. NatWest Group-funded free accounts offer the same full functionality that paying customers receive.

You can get FreeAgent for free while you retain a business bank account with NatWest, Royal Bank of Scotland or Ulster Bank, or make at least one transaction a month through a Mettle bank account.

Once you’ve set up your free account, you may choose to add one or more optional add-ons, depending on your business’s specific needs. These offer enhanced functionality and may be chargeable.

What are “optional add-ons” that are chargeable?

Optional add-ons include Unlimited Smart Capture - useful if you’re recording a high volume of expense receipts or bills every month. Another is connecting your Amazon account to FreeAgent if you are an e-commerce trader, so that all your transactions pull through automatically, saving time on manually inputting them. There’s more info on pricing for those add-ons here.

Is FreeAgent Making Tax Digital (MTD)-compatible?

Yes, FreeAgent is on HMRC’s list of MTD-compatible software - for both VAT and MTD for Income Tax. You can submit quarterly updates and final declarations directly to HMRC from your account. FreeAgent will even auto-populate MTD for Income Tax quarterly updates if you have a bank feed enabled - so you just check the numbers and press “send to HMRC”. And you can file quarterly updates from our mobile app.

It’s important to know that you need a separate FreeAgent account to file each income stream that you have under MTD - so if you’re self-employed and also make money from property, you need two separate accounts. You’re entitled to one FreeAgent account for free with each NatWest Group business bank account you hold.
