What's changing for small businesses in the 2021/22 tax year?

A new tax year is starting on 6th April, which means many of the changes announced in recent Budgets will come into effect. Before the 2021/22 tax year kicks off, here’s a roundup of some of the key changes for small businesses.

Construction Industry Scheme (CIS) updates

If you’re a VAT-registered contractor or subcontractor in the construction industry, you should be aware of new legislation that was introduced on 1st March 2021. VAT-registered contractors must now apply the domestic VAT reverse charge on qualifying services supplied by VAT-registered subcontractors.

IR35 in the private sector

If you’re a freelancer working with clients in the private sector, then until 6th April 2021 you can decide whether your projects fall within IR35.

This will change in the new tax year, however, when clients that are medium or large-sized businesses will have to make that decision. These clients will have to notify you of their decision, and if your work for them does fall within IR35, they will have to collect tax and NationaI Insurance from the money they pay you.
