Great news! FreeAgent now lets you breeze through payroll by checking for client tax code and student loan repayment changes, all without drowning in paperwork. This highly requested, efficiency-enhancing feature is here to rescue you from admin overload. No more waiting around for clients to tell you about changes – you'll be in the know before they are!

How does it work?

Step one: enable electronic notifications for tax coding and student loan changes in your client's PAYE Online account. You’ll need to be authorised to file payroll for them – because, you know, HMRC likes to keep things official.

Step two: sit back, relax, and let FreeAgent fetch updates for you. You can approve or reject the changes with just a couple of clicks. And there you have it - up-to-date details + accurate payroll = time saved + stress reduced.

The details

In the Payroll section of your Practice Dashboard, you’ll see the option to request notices from HMRC. Just pop in your Government Gateway credentials, and FreeAgent will work its magic to pull in any updates like tax code changes or student loan adjustments.

You’ll then get to:

  • Approve or reject these notices (individually or in bulk, because we love options).
  • Watch as your client’s payroll profile and any unfiled payslips automatically update, saving you from the manual slog.

You can also view upcoming notices that don’t need action yet and review the history of those you’ve already approved or removed.

If you prefer to file payroll one client at a time, you can easily switch to the relevant client account, retrieve the HMRC notices, and handle things just like a direct level 8 user would. Easy peasy.
